John:
I run into this problem once and a friend recommended to experiment with
the length of the exhaust tip (after the muffler). His reasoning: the
wavelength of the exhaust note may so happen be either longer or shorter then
the total length of the exhaust system. Since it is both difficult and
expensive to alter the main pipe and muffler, it is much easier to alter the
length of the tip.
What I did was to purchase a piece of the flexible exhaust pipe, commonly
available from auto parts stores anywhere ($10? I recall). I removed the
original chrome tip. Match the diameters and experiment. I was amazed at the
result. Once you determine there is a definite improvement, then you can go
to a muffler shop and ask them to fabricate a custom shaped tip with
appropriate length.
The draw back of this approach depends on the car model. Sometimes you
just do not have the extra room after the muffler.
