I have had good luck with Goof Out.  You can buy it at Home Depot.  Stepped
into some hot gum and got it all over my brand new matts.  About three days
later, I brushed in the Goof Out and got 100% of the gum out w/o hurting the
carpet.  Followed that up with Sonnex carpet shampoo afterwards and it looks
perfect.
