Adding to this discussion, since my '95 318ti (BMW calls it a 318is/5,
based on the label by the door jamb) is also an Alpine White, I wondered
the same thing myself. So, I popped opened the hood and found the paint
code on a sticker. It says, "BMW-alpinweiB III" and on the side, the
numbers "300/0." I assume the paint is clearcoat, since the numbers are
higher?
