I use a heat- and flame-resistant "eggshell"-style foam, glued to the hood
via Permatex orange RTV in my '77 530i. I got a large sheet through
McMaster-Carr, and Industrial Tools and Supplies distributor here on the
West coast (sorry, no contact info). It's dark grey in color.
I've had the stuff for 6 years or so, and it still looks great. Works
quite well at cutting down noise, etc. I cut it with my hot-wire cutter,
but a sharp scissor, or an electric turkey-carving knife would work well,
too.
