>The body shop said $300 to spray the paint (no body work)
For one door only, including removal/disassembly/sandblasting
sounds ok.......for just spray over looks like ripp off.....
>paint suppliers said minimum of $120 for the necessary paint, hardeners,
The fact is that they usually don't sell stuff in small volumes, smallest is 1/4qt:
so if you count 1/4qt epoxy primer & 1/4qt hardener & 1/4qt sandable
primer & 1/4 hardener & 1/4 qt uretane paint & 1/4qt hardener & 1/4qt
thinner ------- ends up much more than $120, so they were trying to
sell you cheap crap.
>AFTER purchasing a nice 4HP DeVilbiss compressor, touch-up gun and
Nice.
>they offered to put custom-mixed DuPont acrylic
IMHO DuPont is crappy stuff.....it don't maches good, dont holds good
etc....Putting lacquer on any kind of BMW is mistake.
>lacquer (same as the body shops use)
None decent body shops are using lacquer........
Well, you asked about ........
IMHO (again) you just missed good chance to do fun stuff,
You already had compressor, decent (for panel work) sandblaster
is about $50 at Sears, bag of Silica sand is about $3.50.
Plus good paint stuff (Spicka or PPG) and lots of fun.........
