525i touring wagon key issue

     Short and sweet everone!!!!
     
     As described in the supplementary manual, one can lock the trunk or 
     the car by using the master key (is there a way to confirm the key is 
     a master?).
       
     Instructions state: withdraw master key in horizontal position (mine 
     does not allow me to do that. 
     
     I got this car used and might not been given the master.  Is there a 
     way to confirm.  The key with the built in lite has a large "S" on it. 
      My other has and "E."
