 Explain to me the noise .. is it JUST on start up... 

 and I presume you mean LIFTER tapping .. a tick tick sorta noise..

 PS: Oh, and yes .. a LOT of M50TU/S50US engines have had lifters replaced
     as they DO give up the ghost!!
