<E30> Head Gasket problems

The radiator on a friends 1991 318i has been damaged by a broken 
fanbelt while his wife was driving. He is not sure if she noticed the 
problem before driving it for several miles and he is afraid there may 
be head gasket problems.
While we know the radiator will have to be replaced, my guess is the 
head gasket will be ok. Is there any tell tale signs we should look for 
or is it a matter of wait and see when the car is running again?
