M3 tach problem

Hello all........

I have an '88 M3 110Km. I Recently the tach has not started up when I crank the engine. After seveal minutes it comes to life.  During the starting period the inspection light comes on and then disappears.  

A friend told me it's probably a loose connection of a faulty sensor.  Is it easy to find or should I take it to the dealer, not a pleseant prospect since these type of problems end up taking alot of time to find.

Any comments or suggestions would help
