Tire and rear-end information

I cannot identify the tires on the 1986 325e I purchased used.  They 
say "Ultra Metric", and have M+S markings, Treadwear rating 280, Temp 
rating "A", 195 16R/15?, Steel Belted Radial, max load 1250 lbs. at 
44psi.

My question is directed first to identify the make and model of the 
tire, with the objective of obtaining the correct PSI to run in this 
tire.  I do very little performance driving, mostly highway touring, 
and a balance between max fuel economy and traction is desirable for 
me.  The BMW plate says 31 psi, with 31 front and 36 rear under load. 
 The tires had 40 psi in them when I purchased the car.

I'm not really pleased with the mushy ride I get at 31 psi, but 
neither do I want to sacrifice gas economy (if this will happen when 
the psi is increased).  Any recommendations?

Also, the vehicle has about 151K miles on it.  When the car moves 
from park to reverse or drive (automatic trans.), there is a 
noticable "thunk" in the rear end (occasionally).  Is this a function 
of a high-torque engine/trans. combo, or is there something I'm 
looking to replace soon (I've seen the threads on trans. life -- uh 
oh!)?  I'm not working right now, so replacement at this point is not 
an option, neither is big repair bills.  If it is something to be 
concerned about, should I try to do something to prolong life in 
whatever might be wrong?  Help!

P.S.  I saw the VIN FAQ, but my VIN doesn't fit that pattern.  Is 
there an FAQ or can someone help me decode the VIN for an 86 model 
325e?
