ZF 4 hp 22 automatic transmission

I read the FAQ 12 regarding 7 series transmission failures at  
http://cbsgi1.bu.edu/bmw/new_bmw.html  and since I was thinking about  
newer   3 or 5 series automatic...........
Are 86 and up 3 series and  5 series automatics reliable?

         I may have answered my  own question.....  While looking at the
service bulletins for BMWs at http://www.alldata.tsb.com  I found  out
that the 4hp22  is the transmission for all the1986 and up 3 series and 5 
series and  that there are obvious reliability problems up to 1993. This 
transmission  appears to be a lemon up to at least1993.
I am not  impressed. They could not fix this for7 years?
Opposing views.......please.
