Gentlemen:
Thanks to all who answered my question re: should one wait until all the
SI lights go out or, if the interval between oil changes seems too long, ignore
them and change the oil more frequently.
My plan is to keep my '92 525i, which presently has 56,000 miles, until
it has about 200,000 miles. As it will be my second car and be driven almost
exclusively for long trips or for pleasure on the weekends, I suspect that it is
going to be a looooong time before 200,000 miles rolls over on that odometer.
We'll see.
Meantime, I chickened out :-<. One respondent speculated that the last
green light would probably go out between 8,500 and 9,000 miles! Sorry guys, I
just can't/won't wait that long between oil changes. When I asked my new-found
German BMW mechanic for his advice, his response was "I can sell you an oil
change now or a new engine later. Entirely your choice."
I know that I don't have to change every 3,000 miles because engine oils
keeps getting better and better, but I don't think they are good enough to last
for 9,000 miles. My mechanic says that all oils sold in the U.S. must be
guaranteed to last for 7,000 miles. Maybe so; maybe not. His charge for an oil
change and a new BMW filter was $35, which seems quite reasonable to me.
Danke for all the responses.
Bob G.
