<E30> Auto transmission problems

After I started my car this evening, I noticed that the shift lever seemed
to glide freely back and forth. It appears that the transmission is stuck in
the reverse position from when I backed the car in the driveway. The car
will start so I assume the neutral start switch is broken but I am concerned
there may be more major problems.

I had no indication of any transmission problems until this occurred. I
would appreciate any suggestions what may be wrong or at least how I may get
it into drive so I may get it to the dealer which is about 75 miles away.
