Central Locking Deadlock Failure & repair.

Ever since I bought my 1986 525iSE, the deadlocking on the central lockin=
g has not worked. I repaired it at the weekend and thought I'd tell you h=
ow.

The locking on my car is probably the same for other series from the same=
 era.

The deadlocks are activated by turing the drivers door lock 90 degrees an=
ticlockwise and withdrawing the key in the horizontal position. This mech=
anically prevents the drivers doorlock from being pulled up and sends a '=
lock arrest' signal to the other locks so they can't be pulled up either.=

After removing the interior door trim and the plastic waterproof film, I =
could see the lock barrel had a flip-flop mechanism which flipped across =
and spragged the lock mechanism when the key is turned to the deadlock po=
sition, it also pressed a microswitch in to inhibit the rest of the centr=
al locking system.

Unfortuanately due to wear, the flip-flop mechanism was going to far, thi=
s is obviously quite critical as I it looked OK at first. It flipped past=
the point where it sprags the lock and presses the microswitch. This was=
cured by fastening a 1"x1"x2" peice of wood next to the microswitch usin=
g a single screw, nut and washers via the spare hole there. This stops th=
e mechanism going too far if positioned correctly.
