I remember reading a discussion in the Roundel a few years ago of
how octane ratings are figured. What I can't remember is if octane ratings
are additive? For example, at a gas station yesterday, 87 octane was
10 cents cheaper then 89 octane which was 4 cents cheaper then
93 octane. Do this mean I could save money by pumping 2 gallons
of 87 octane and 1 gallon of 93 octane to get three gallons of
89 octane? Or is mixing octane nonlinear.
