E30 radio reception

I get terrible reception in my E30.  When the radio is on and the ignition is
in stage 1 (power to the radio but nothing else) reception is good.  As soon
as I turn the ignition past stage 1 or start the engine, reception is bad.
 Any advice???   -jamie
