Tony,
Your fuel system problems could be caused by the fuel pump relay. The contacts
get pitted over time and become intermittant. Also, don't rule out the fuel
pressure regulator as these have been known to fail quite frequently.
I would recommend that you install a fuel pressure gauge in the line going
between the filter and the fuel rail. You can buy one from Summit Racing
Equipment and sells for about $15 + $5 for the in line adapter. Be sure to
get the 0-60 psi model. Once installed, you'll know right away whether or
not you have a fuel delivery problem.
I installed one in my 85 318i and have found it very useful in troubleshooting
any fuel related problems.
