Re: odometer tampering

A message appeared on this very digest a few months ago apparently posted
from Germany that said "If your car has too many miles, email me for more
info", which turned out to be exactly this: for a large fee, the odometer
can be set to any value.

I hope BMW is addressing this very serious problem. Perhaps dealers
could report the indicated mileage at each service to BMW corporate, and
then make that info available to the public. By looking at the reported
mileage by date, possibly suspicious data could be indentified
(particularly if compared with typical mileage profiles).

Of course, any odometer can be tampered with. One way to protect
yourself is to insist on full records when purchasing a used car. While
someone might change an odometer once, they are less likely to fabricate
an entire paper trail of repair invoices with mileages on each one.

  Other ideas?
