insurance, theft

The Vehicle Information Centre of Canada just published some interesting
stats on insurance experience for 1992-1993. (They're a consortium of
Canadian
ins. cos.) The stats are only for popular cars. The only BMWs are for
4-door 325s. There's nothing for Mercedes, Porsches, Vets, Nissan Zs,
Saabs or even Volvos.

The stats are ratios, for example a stat of 100 means the car is exactly
average, of 50 that there was half as many claims as average, of 200 that
there were twice as many claims.

Here are the numbers:

Freq. of Theft Claims 76 [worst Mustang Cobra GT 1221; VW Golf2dr 627]
Theft Loss$ 200 [worst Mustang Cobra 2282; Mustang L(X) 587]
Collision$ 208 [worst M Cobra 262; Acura Legend 250]
Comprehensive$ 166 [worst M Cobra 1261; Mustang LX 357]
AccidentBenefits, 2nd highest quartile (> 120, but no stat given)

Some notes: I infer (a) 325s have better than average locks, but are more
expensive than these American, Asian & VW cars (ranging from Cadillac to
Hyundai) to fix/replace. Only a few cars on the list come in more
expensive, besides what's noted above, high cars are Talon Tyrbo, Lincoln
Town Car (comprehensive) Jimmy/Blazer 4wd (comp.), Jeep YJ (comp),
Suzuki Sidekick softtop 4wd (comp.); many of the multipurse vehicles for
theft (with Explorer & Suburban being notably less stolen).

Note that accident benefits are low in Canada, because Medicare means
there generally aren't any hospital or doctor bills to cover. Our
insurance is lower than USA too.

If you want the full report, you can contact these folks at 175 Commerce
Valley Drive W, Suite 220, Markham Ont L3T 7P6. I don't have phone number
but it's the 905 area code.
