Re-dying leather seats.

The leather seats from mid-80s BMWs was somewhat stiff and tended to
"crack" from wear - not so that the leather split, but the dye wore
away along folds exposing the un-dyed leather below.  Tends to make
black seats look terrible :-(

Has anyone tried to re-dye the cracks?  You obviously want to use
something that won't rub off on cloths.  Does anyone have any other
suggestions to fix the problem or keep it from getting worse?
