Armand,
Ok, now I see. Not to nit-pick, but we're not comparing apples to apples. (Or
Alpines to Alpines) A FM modulated unit is a different animal, and I think
that if you had identical stereo set-ups, one with a FM mod unit and one with
a direct feed from the head unit, you would notice the difference.

I recently installed an AMSOIL foam air filter into my 528e. And I
feel thrilled by the experience. My car would be a real loser at
low rpm's and this definitely made a big difference.
As many of you may not know what this stuff is, I will try to explain.
OK, the paper-based air filters (OEM and Fram etc) essentially do a
very good job at filtering - they remove even very fine particles.
However, in the process, the offer a lot of resistance to the flow
of air.
K&N uses an oil-wetted gauze filter - the flow is much improved (due
to reduced air resistance), but the filteration performance is not
as good.
AMSOIL uses an oil-wetted polyurethane foam filter. This has flow
characteristics much better than the paper type, and quite close
(but a little worse than) K&N, and filteration characteristics much
better than K&N and quite close to (but a little worse than) paper.
But more important, it seems that the foam type filter has a much
higher capacity to hold dust without getting clogged, so in the long
run, it outperforms both the paper-based filters and oil-gauze type
filters. (And the oil they use is much more sticky than K&N.)
And at 1/2 the cost of K&Ns too. (I got mine for something like $28
including shipping.)

Subject: Ooops! / Decoding VIN's
The bloopers segment of the local news here just showed a clip involving BMW
NA. To commemorate the opening of the S.C. plant, BMW sent a car by
transporter to go on display in the S.C. state capitol...however, nobody
bothered to inform the driver unloading the display car that the brake fluid
had been drained, so as he backed off the loading ramp...he couldn't stop!
The video showed the car backing out of the transporter, down the ramp, and
then out of frame...followed by the sound of impact and broken glass....and
finally a shot of a very PO'd driver.

A previously posted question about VIN's had a partial key on how to decode
all the numbers and letters...can anyone provide the full scoop on how to
decipher the VIN and production number?

Never heard of this problem, but the listing of tech bulletins from the

I'm buying my CD changer from a local (The Stereo Shop of Buffalo and
Rochester, NY) audio store. I'm confident that you should be able to come
very
close to this price by going to the phone book and looking for an Alpine
dealership. Even if you have it professionally installed, it still won't
get
close to the $471 when you count the trasferrability between cars and the
fact
that the Alpine unit is the most up-to-date version...
[Could you post this on the DL. I lost the DL address. Thanks]
I dont know what the argument is here, you can mail order the oem BMW
changer for about 400, and you can mail order the alarm. it is about 1000
times easier to install, and it is clearer because there is apparently a
fiber optic cable to the head unit.

Subject: M3 Press Release
Just received this from a colleague of mine from aol:
BMW's 1995 M3 WINS THREE TOP AWARDS
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- BMW's M3 captured three
prestigious automotive awards. As the first European car to win all
three distinctions, M3 was named "Automobile of the Year for 1995" by
Automobile Magazine, "Import Car of the Year" by Automundo, and --
together with the 325i -- one of Car and Driver's "Ten Best Cars."
In the upcoming issue of Car and Driver, Editor-in-Chief Csaba Cere
concludes: "Despite achieving great success with its 3-Series sedans --
including three previous Ten Best awards -- the Bavarian automaker keeps
rolling out new and even more desirable versions of its small sedan."
Cere continues: "The increased power is coupled to a revised
chassis with a tauter suspension and stickier tires, which still
somehow manages to provide a comfortable, refined ride. The result is
an engaging car that is both faster and roomier than any of its
competitors."
With an eye toward the needs of the Hispanic market, Automundo's
Editor in Chief, Jorge Koechlin, added: "The M3 represents the best of
BMW's Motorsports tradition. It is a driver's car that offers excellent
value at a competitive price. At $35,800, the M3 is the finest sports
car you can buy."
According to BMW, the M3 is the first model built by its Motorsports
division specifically for the U.S. market. The company listened closely
to BMW owners and experts from the media. BMW's U.S. sales and
marketing chief, Victor H. Doolan, explained: "Enthusiasts requested an
M-type sports coupe with five seats, great handling and braking and an
understated appearance. Our objective was to meet these requirements,
but with a price tag that made commercial sense."
BMW customers responded. By early October, nearly all of the M3
models allotted to the U.S. market were sold.
Automoblle's David E. Davis concludes: "BMW is on a roll. It is
the liveliest of the European automobile manufacturers. Most
interesting, perhaps, is the fact that BMW managed a major management
shift and a wholesale refurbishment of their product line without ever
losing sight of who they were or what kind of cars they ought to build."

I have a 535i, and in cold weather the high beams take 1-2 seconds to come on.
It appears to be either a cold sensitive high beam switch or a relay. I would
recommend that you squirt a little contact cleaner into the business end of the
ignition switch, and swap the starting relay in the fuse box with another one.

Subject: catastrophic coolant loss Q (91 318)
Just had my 91 318is in for its 30K checkup at the local independent BMW
shop. The car was fine but they told me about stories they had been hearing
about failure of a gasket (or did they say seal) between the head and the
front cover of the engine block on the 16 valve 1.8 liter engine. When
this goes there is the loss of coolant and you then can quickly lose the
engine. Apparently this has only happened in 91s as there was a design
change with the 92 model year. They told me one case of this happening at
49K miles and the engine was toast after the driver ignored the check
engine light (she was out in the middle of nowhere and was not about to stop).
I just talked with BMW customer relations and the person who talked to me
was not very helpful. She said there was no recall on this and she had
heard nothing about it but that she would only hear about it if there
was a recall.
Does anyone out there now anything about this?

The valve which controls how much coolant goes through the heater core does
not have any position between full-on and full-off. The climate control system
cycles the valve on and off as needed to keep the cabin temperature at the
set value. This cycling is inaudible on my 533i with the engine running,
but your car has much less background noise I'm sure.

Subject: K&N Filter and Chip in a 1993 318i
Back about a week ago I posted a message "Another Tire question?".
In the blurb I mentioned that I had installed a K&N air filter and
a chip in my 1993 318i. I received more questions about the filter
and the chip then I received answers to my tire questions. So here
are my experiences.
I purchased both parts from a local shop. The K&N filter cost was
$44 Canadian (.73 US = 1 Canadian) and arrived after a couple of
days. The performance increase was not noticeable except that
subjectively the engine felt smoother and a bit stronger above 5900
rpm.
The AutoThority chip arrived after a couple of weeks. I was told by
the shop that the delay was caused by the part having been shipped
to an old address. Now the problems really started. The
instructions were generic for several makes and models. The
location given for the control unit was some where near or in the
fire wall on the passenger side of the automobile. After tracing a
thick bunch of wires around the dash and pulling off a panel or two
I managed to locate my ABS control unit. Replacing the panels and
looking under the hood I found I thicker bunch of wire leading to
a foam rubber cover under which I found a trap door which when open
exposed the correct control unit. At this point following the
instructions the unit was easily removed.
Next step opening the control unit by bending back 4 breakaway tabs
(no fooling the BMW warranty police) and removing 8 screws. Pity
some models as they don't have the screws and they are told to put
it back together using rubber bands!
Next big problem, the insides are completely different then the
instruction. Where there should be two boards there was only one
which was covered by surface mounted components and the EPROM was
soldered in without a socket, definitely the wrong part! As it
turned out BMW had exchanged the unit for the new style under
warranty repair. A call to AutoThority confirmed that my control
unit was a 1994 unit. They also promised to de-solder and remove
the current chip, replace it with a socket and a new chip. As they
were not equipped to fully test the unit after these modifications
and I do not trust US-Canadian customs (free trade or not) and I
was going to a driving school next weekend, I opted to get the new
chip Fed-Xed to my house. When the new chip arrived I very
carefully de-soldered the chip, replaced it with a high quality
socket, coated the socket and the main connector with a special
chemical to eliminate any possible future electrical contact
problems, installed the new chip, re-install the unit. The new
instructions were much better for the second chip.
Now the results for the combined K&N filter and chip:
More torque across the complete range, very smooth all the way up
to 6800 red line. A real Miata killer.
Down side:
The need to use 92 octane fuel (instead of 90). About 8% higher
fuel consumption ( it could be a heavier right foot). At 3/4 throttle
torque surges slightly.

Hey Folks:
Sorry that this list being subjected to chain letters by idiots from
this university. I have already sent mail to staff regarding this.
In the past, they have been known to deactivate user accounts for
violation of fair-use codes, and sending chain letters is one of
these violations.
Sigh! When will people learn? Good luck through email seems to me on
par with psychics who claim their powers are enhanced by the special
signals that emanate from telephone lines. Aaaargh!
In the meanwhile, I'd suggest we simply ignore such letters.
And now to tie this back to BMW -- Has anyone looked at the new
Haynes for later model 3/5 series? I just picked up one, and I must
say, they have dealt with one of the major complaints I had with
Bentley's and Chilton's -- their pictures are for the most part
much clearer. They also seem to do a better job at detailing some
of the more complex procedures. for the $12.88 it cost me at
Pep Boys, I'd say its well worth it.
