Timer AC/heat...

Hello all. I have a '92 535i which I purchased used. The only feature 
of the OBC which I haven't quite figured out is the "timer" settings 
which turn on the a/c system at a set time. 

I was wondering if it's safe to set the timer for a particular time and 
let the a/c run off the car battery.  Wouldn't that put an excessive 
drain on the battery?  Also, can the system be set to heat in the winter 
time, or it just for the summers?
