02 Gas vapor line...need it?

I think I've realized what that funny smell in my car is.  I believe
the fuel tank vapor line that runs through the car is cracked
somewhere.

My question is, do I really need this line?  I understand that it is
for emission purposes (right?)...but what else is it going to do
for my car.

So either I order up the part..or can I buy that tubing from
somewhere (anyone know of a place?)...or do I just plug it?
