Manual transmission lubricant

Since changing the oil in my manual gearbox, the gearchange has become
very stiff when the gearbox oil is cold. I used 80W90 oil in the
gearbox. This stiffness lessens as the gearbox oil warms up,
however the change is not as smooth when warm as before the
oil change.  

I discussed this problem with 2 mechanics and both suggested
using automatic transmission fluid in the gearbox. 

Any opinions on this mater will be much appreciated.
