Vexed by the hex? Here's what you do (IF your replacing the rotor).
You've pulled the caliper, right? And the hex bolt is balky? ..... take a
good sized hammer and slam that rotor from behind (accessed in the area
where the caliper was). Have the rotor positioned so that you land the blow
to the opposite edge (and from behind) of where the hex bolt is. Don't have
anyone standing in front of the rotor, because it IS going to be coming off.
(If you partially screw a lug bolt in one of the holes it will catch the
rotor quite nicely.) The rotor is so thin where the hex screw is holding it,
it WILL break away. Then all you are left to deal w/ is the bit of rotor
that is caught behind the bolt head. This can be readily dealt w/ using a
hammer and chisel, or reasonable facsimile. Then, you'll be suprised at how
easily that bolt can be removed .....it WANTS to come out now. Vice grips
will do. Rarely is the bolt actually frozen into the the hub. Once the rotor
is gone, the bolt just doesn't care anymore. So, a hammer, vice grips and an
optional implement of general persuasion..........(and, of course, safety
glasses).
And you thought that bolt held the rotor on........now you see the rotor
is there so that you can get the bolt out!
