Fuel lines

I'm running new fuel lines in my 2002 (for the "soon-to-be-here" M3 engine).
On Pete McHenry's advice, I'm going to run a 1/4" ID, 5/16" OD stainless
line from the pump to the engine.  My question is, if I have to make any 
connections with unions, should I just get ones at the hardware store and flare
the end of the gas line, or is there a better/safer way to do it?
