[bmw] E30 Gas Smell and whirring sound

I don't recall you saying where the gas puddle was, but if in the engine
area, be sure to check the "fuel dampers" - thin metal cylinders installed
in the fuel line between firewall and fuel rail.  These leak at the seam and
can cause the smell and drip.  Remove it/them and replace with new length of
appropriate high-pressure 8mm fuel line.
