[bmw] caution align airbag steering wheel
Gentlemen
When replacing steering components on airbag cars, align the
steering wheel to straight/center and lock it into place before
removal of old parts.
New/reman steering rack/pinion assemblies may not be "centered" as
they come out of the box.
Prior to attaching the steering shaft, align the new components carefully.
Once installed, dial-in the toe-in with the steering wheel still
locked in center.
Some BMWs have a "clock-spring wound" wire to activate the airbag.
This wire has very limited movement out of center and is very
expensive and difficult to replace.
Early airbag BMWs did not have airbag wiring come into the
diagnostic connector, so reset had to be done at the control modules
hidden you don't want to know where.
