It could be a problem with the neutral safety switch, which prevents the engine from turning over if the transmission is not in Park or Neutral. Try moving the gear shift lever into either Park or Neutral positions and see if the car will start. If not, the next step would be to temporarily bypass the switch and see if the problem goes away.

A starter won't fail abruptly, so check the easy stuff first.

Subject: [bmw] E30 dead

Yesterday my daughters 91 325i, automatic, running fine. Today, won't start.
When key is turned, all indicator lights come on, but no sound from
engine/starter at all. As if battery was disconnected, except for indicator lights. Any
suggestions on where to look first? Thanks.
