How critical is your odometer?  The odometer in my Mercedes has not 
worked since the early 1990's and I have no plans on worrying about it.  
You can guestimate service with miles per gallon and fuel consumption if 
you know what is average for your car.  Another thing to keep in mind 
with older cars is some states don't require odometer statements for 
cars over 10 years old.  They are "mileage exempt" at least thats what 
they do here in Georgia. 
Mercedes commonly have odometer failures due to a gear in the odometer 
assembly.  There is a place online that sells replacement gears for a 
number of cars that have VDO instruments.  The last time I was in a BMW 
I believe I saw VDO instruments so this may be the same failure.  You 
might find something by doing a google search.  If you have no luck 
e-mail me privately and I will see if I can find the link in my mail 
archives. 
Good luck if you decide to do the repair.  Its a pretty simple operation 
on a Mercedes with the most complicated part being doing the gear 
replacment but I dont know how BMW mounts their clusters.  Mercedes 
Friction fits their cluster in the dash opening and you can pull it out 
with a special tool or a coat hanger.
