[bmw] transmission problems

Hello,

I have a 1989 735i which continues to have the following problem: at 
random but generally after a series of short trips (never after a cold 
start) it will not change beyond 2nd gear.

This is frustrating, but even more frustrating is that none of the 
specialist BMW mechanics here in Adelaide are certain of how to fix it.  
When they check they find fluid leaked out onto the wiring and they air 
dry this.  This fixes the problem for about a week.  The real problem is 
where does this fluid leak from?  They have already replaced a "wiring 
loom" but this did not help and I have now been quoted around 2000 
Australian dollars to replace the "transmission wiring harness" but no 
guarantee that this will do it.

Any advice from anyone?
