[bmw] 328iC temperature gage reading

I should have attached this to my previous post however...
I have a strange reading from my temp gage that makes me think the
thermostat maybe sticking wide open. When I drive the car in warm weather
the gage will go from the first white mark to the middle in normal driving.
In cold weather like 40 degrees the temp gage is way below the white mark
and only if you go into the city and are in stop and go traffic will the
gage goes even to the middle. MPG seems the same but I am suspecting either
a bad sender or a stuck thermometer. This behavior is related to the
external temp. My M-3 does not do this and goes to one setting and stays
there. Any ideas?
