[bmw] RE: bmw-digest V10 #133

Gary,

The squealing is the bearing, and they can be greased. I did this on my 1985
e28, and it was damn site easier than the 1976 mercedes 300D I did.

On the e28 the motor is accessible from under the hood. On the Merc, you
remove the car from the fan. I think when they manufactured the car, the
first part to appear on the assembly line was the blower motor.

On the speed issue, there is a set of resistors that control the speed (I
guess). No clue where they might be on your car.

Regards,

doug

Subject: [bmw] Blower Fan Motor

Hello all. The blower fan motor in my 1984 733i is exhibiting 2
problems. First, the variable speed doesn't work properly. You can get
low speed (by setting it to one of the fixed positions) but on the
variable speed you only get high speed. Second, it has started
squealing loudly, and sometimes doesn't run at all (particularly in very
cold weather).

So, I'm guessing I need to replace the blower motor. How difficult of
a job is this? Any recommendations on where to purchase a new motor?
And any instructions on how to do the replacement job?

Thanks - Gary
