[bmw] E34 imobaliser ignoring key!

Its a 1996 E34 with the BMW alarm that works
the locks/immobiliser etc.

I turned it off came back about 30 mins later.
All power OK from the ignition but no crank to start using
the black plastic key I always use.

Turn on with spare grey plastic key OK.

It cranks and runs ok with suspect key
only after initiating with the spare.

If a wait for the immobiliser to drop in, relay heard after
about 9 seconds, its no-go with the suspect key?

Do the security chips in the keys fail?
Is it a new key job?
