[bmw] <e32> ignition lock problem.

Yesterday, after a few days of acting up, the ingnition lock on my wife's
1990 735il refused to into the start postion.
The Bently manual says the lock can be removed by turning it to the start
postion and putting a wire in the small hole and pulling it out. It seems
simple enough but i can't get the key to turn that far into the position the
book calls for.

I can turn the key only far enough to unlock the wheel if I hold the key.

Is my problem deeper into the column with some type of other locking
mechanism?

I was able to drive 20 mi. home by taking out the ingnition switch, turning
it with a screw driver to start the car and then holding the key turned with
my right hand in order to keep the steering wheel from locking up and
steering with my left hand. I was glad for once that it was an automatic.

any help or a "been there, done that" would be appreciated.
