Tire advice 95 M3 with BBS RX 18 x 8 38mm offset

I need to replace the 235-35-18 Michelin Pilots on my otherwise unmodified
95 M3.  The 35 series profile is proving problematic with  anything other
than smooth, pothole free roads so I want to move up to 40 series tires.
Tire Rack lists a fitment of 225-40-18, but on a stock suspension car (with
no mods planned), has anyone fitted 235-40-18 tires with no clearance
problems?  I'm very much aware that my ride height and rolling circumference
with change and therefore the speedo reading too, but I willing to adapt to
that.  I just hate to put tires with a more narrow cross section than the
235's I now have.  But if I have to go with 225's, then so be it or I'll
consider remounting the original M contours with the 235-40-17's.
