Oil Leak and Overheating



I have what appear to be two unrelated problems. The first is an oil leak that appears under the front passenger side of the engine. After I have park my car a puddle forms under the alternator from pooling of oil in the mounting bracket. I am not losing a lot of oil, but it happens all the time. It does not happen though when the engine is running, only when the car is parked. I have heard that one of the two bolts holding the crank sensor is a common culprit; how do I remove and seal this bolt? 
The other problem is overheating. When the AC is on it is more frequent, so I jumped the aux fan switches and they worked fine. How do I check the temp switches that the jumped wires operate? Could this also be a thermostat problem? Even if I am not using the AC I will overheat if I am waiting in a long line of slow moving traffic.

Folks:

I get only water dribbling out on my driver-side windshield washer on the hood
of my '96 328.
I assume the water pump/motor has gone bad. Is this easy fix where I can 
unconnect the old and reconnect a new motor/pump? (I replaced a clogged 
spout on that side before).

I'm posting this for a freind who is not to savy with
the ways of the net. Please help him out if you can


The suspension in my vehicle fell out of my 98 328I
BMW, A certified BMW Tech from North America check out
the vehicle. Basically said my Certified Warranty
would not cover the vehicle. But the Ball joints were
defective just broke off, this is a manufacturer
defect and BMW will not stand behind their car. They
even said this is something that isn't suppose to
happen, I only have 59,000 miles on my vehicle. BMW
should stand behind their vehicle, if there are any
other cases like mine please let me know. I plan on
pursuing this to the highest level that I can. If you
could be of any help it would be appreciated.

The biggest problem, and maybe this is just because they are relatively new in the US market, is that people forget to turn on their *real* headlights when it gets dark out. So you have a bunch of Pontiacs driving around at night trying to see with nothing but fog lights and dim headlights. I'm still trying to figure out if Pontiac forgot to include a switch for those fog lights, or what...

Hey listers, it's good to be back! I was subscribed about six years or so ago when I had my Dakar yellow M3, but dropped off when I traded it. 

Now, the better half has a 1999 328ic that's having a bit of a problem, so I'm back to see if anyone can share any wisdom on it. When putting the top down, the unlatching goes fine, the top starts to fold, the boot comes up to about a 45 degree angle, and then everything stops. It's weird because it doesn't seem to be physically in a bind or anything, it just stops. Sound familiar, or anything I should check?

OK gurus
Some time ago I posted regarding car immobilised
when the air bag light came on.

The car has been fine since this incident after powering the air
bag fuse no. 47 from an adjacent one under the back seat.
The car was startable and just the irritating air bag reminder
for 5 mins each start up ... must get it cleared.

Yesterday the radio went off while driving .. no hassle.
But the next time I came to start it NOTHING.

No power to the air bag circuit fuse either mmmmm

Cross feeding once more to F47 under the back seat tripped a relay
powered the radio and the car will start.

cross feed removed and all seems fine?

So ..
Is there a common feed point for the radio and air bag circuit anywhere
that
may also involve the immobiliser or starting protocol?

Mike,
Tell your friend to take have an independent wrench inspect the car (pay 
him to come to the dealer lot or have the car towed to an independent 
shop). 
Steel control arms do not fail. Ball joints will eventually wear, but not 
in a non-race car at 59K miles. 
However, if the previous or the current owner of the car had jumped a few 
curbs or managed to introduce control arms to immovable objects in some 
other way, anything is possible. A visual inspection should reveal the 
damage. 
A dealer would normally be more than happy to work on a CPO car as it is 
easy money in their pocket. Only in the cases of obvious severe abuse 
would they shoot themselves in the foot and deny BMW CPO coverage.

Don't jump to unsubstantiated conclusions.

I would advise your friend to do more thorough homework before wasting his 
time and money.
