RE:E36 windshield trim problem
I went through two windshields in a month, the first because a rock
broke it, and the second due to me cracking the windshield installing
the new plastic weather trim piece you are asking about. Never, ever use
a screwdriver to install the plastic trim and touch the glass. Further,
never use metal tools when working with the glass, unless you intend to
break the glass.
When the installers replaced my windshield, they told me the insurance
would not replace that trim piece. So, they took off the old one and I
purchased one from the dealer for approximately 70 bucks. I cracked the
windshield trying to get the corner edges below the hinges with a screw
driver. Installing this trim piece really is easy when you know the
trick. To get the corners in and under the edge of the windshield, you
have to loosen a torx (?) nut on each end of the hood hinge, this allows
the hood to move forward and you get enough access to push the corners
of the trim in place. Use a wood or plastic instrument to push the
corners under the glass if necessary.
Wouldn't you know it was the second installer from the same company that
told me how to do all this and said, never let the other guy put a
windshield into my car again (the other guy being the owner of the
windshield business)
Good Luck, Frank
