How to deal with long URLs (Useful, but OT)
(Cross-posting to several lists, for maximum exposure...)
All,
I ran across a website that allows you to take long, ugly URLs and transform
them into something much shorter and readable. The website is:
http://www.snipurl.com/teindex.php
Basically, it works this way:
You're on a webpage, and want to send the URL to someone. However, the URL
is long, and wraps to a second (or even third or fourth line), and the
pasting process doesn't work too well. Or, because the URL wraps across
lines, the link is no longer 'clickable'. The solution:
1) Open a second browser window (CNTL+N, or File-->New-->Window), and
navigate to:
http://www.snipurl.com/teindex.php
2) Back on the original browser window, highlight the URL for the page, and
copy it to the clipboard. Usually, this is simply done by clicking on the
link in the Address box for the browser, and using CNTL+C or Edit-->Copy.
3) Go to the second browser window, and paste the link into THE LONG URL box
4) Go to the Nickname box on the snipurl page, and type in a nickname.
There are some restrictions on the characters that can be used. Basically,
no spaces or special characters.
5) Click the Snip URL! button. The shortened URL will be put into your
clipboard, as well as listed on the results screen.
6) Go to your email program (or browser window with email opened), and
simply paste the shortened URL into your message (CNTL+V or Edit-->Paste).
That's it!
I hope you find this useful.
