Well I have always been convinced that the hydraulic tensioner is the more robust and better engineered device.
I will refrain from boring the group and not list my reasons for the prefernce.
My 200k 164 has a hydraulic tensioner from new and will continue to do so until the car breathes its last.
I do rebuild the tensioner at every belt change - I laid in a supply of kits a few years ago to keep me going.

However I had to consider my position on my 164S since it was already fitted with a mechanical device. I concluded that it would be risky to remove the mechanical set up and so I installed a new mechanical unit. The previous installation was done by ALGAR in PA, and they seemed to know what they were doing. I was verrrry careful setting it up and touch wood it has been fine for 10,000 miles.

So I think if you are meticulous about the process and buy an ALFA supplied part, you should not have a problem.
However it will not suffer fools gladly!

Has anyone upgraded their 164 radiator?  I'm getting
mine ready for the Texas heat and have heard that it's
the reason why 164s run so hot.  I know Tom Zat has
one for $500 but that's just a little too steep for
me.

Due to the hot engine compartment, what's you all's
opinion and going back to the hydraulic tensioner in
the 164?  Will the seals tend to weep sooner then 30k?

This mechanical tensioner and the engine possibly
turning backwards on startup/turn off really has
gotten me weary.  I'd like the hydraulic since you'll
at least get a warning.
