FWIW, my current area (Orange County, same as Greater Los Angeles, CA)
tests are 2000 and 2500 rpm under load on the dyno.. the machine specs
the rpm, no comments on what gear. The guy doing mine put the car in
third.each time. Wheee.. 9.75 and 10.5% CO!! I'm a gross polluter!!!
(that's what I get for believing them telling me I could adjust the car,
before they took my money and ran the test)
Two Johns made comments about emissions, focusing on engine speed and the
emissions cycle.
One follow-up. Alfa did not specify the shift schedule used on the cycle,
that was determined by the EPA, and is mostly common across all manual
transmission cars. Especially at that early of a law date... It's
possible to set a schedule based on a random shift survey, which people get
in and drive- the average person's schedule will be the one. Also, for
computer control cars, one can use a shift light (which do work, actually)
to prompt a shift.
I would find it questionable, based on all the emissions tests I've run in
my life, that the car didn't exceed too many rpm's as people might
think. The max speed on the cycle is 50mph, in 5th gear, that is not
high. And the car will cruise in the 30-40mph range in 4th gear. High
speed are not good, either....
Also, even at high loads, at least one seen on any typical test, whatever
emissions the engine makes, the emissions systems should be able to handle
it- if it's working properly. While 800ppm is a lot for a tailpipe
number, it's not much for a raw engine number...
