I have driven for years with an off center shift lever in my 87 Spider. It
was over to the left and rubbed against the left edge of the leather shift boot.
Finally had it repaired at Auto Delta in Atlanta. The problem was a
compressed rubber bushing on the back left transmission mount. This allowed the
transmission and engine to lean to the port side. According to Bob at AD this is
fairly common and is independent of the motor mounts.

Uh, did they add another one in the later Spiders??
Far as I know, there is only one transmission mount, center back, and
the two motor mounts in the rough center of the block.
Still haven't given my engine a lift to see what slack I may have..
