164 factory electrical manual states
-Temperature sensed by engine coolant temperature sensor above 140.3 deg C (284.5 deg F), or shortcircuit to battery positive pole.

-Temperature sensed by engine coolant sensor below -35.4 deg C (-95.7 deg F), or circuit interrupted.

Check conditions: Air temperature greater than or equal to - 20 deg C (-68 deg F)

Test steps: Check for presence at terminals of engine coolant temperature sensor S7 of a resistance depending on temperature of engine as shown in diagram in electrical manual.

If OK go to next step, if not OK, replace engine coolant sensor.

Continuity check: Check continuity between pin 13 of Motronic control unit and engine coolant sensor (brown wire) and between ground point and engine coolant sensor (black wire).
