[alfa] Re: V-6 Engine swaps
Historically, an old-school 327 'Vette engine would have a home in any
Italian marquee with the possible exception of Ferrari. Do your homework on
the 'supercars' of the 60's...at one time, the GM V8 was considered quite
the marvel among performance Italian car builders. I have to admit that even
today that old plant is impressive: few Alfas I'm aware of could keep up
with my fiancie's '98 Corvette...on the straightaway OR in the curves.
OTOH, the Alfa V6 is a very reliable, well-engineered engine. Its only
Achilles Heal is the timing belt but many other engines from many other
companies have the same problem. My former daily driver -- a Cadillac-badged
Opel Omega -- suffered the same problem. And like Alfa, GM keeps lowering
the projected life of the belt. They started at 100K miles and are now
suggesting 50K. Sound familiar?
The Alfa V6 is a mature engine, true. But parts are cheaper than many
European makes and they run a very long time with maintenance. My 164 had
115K and great compression when the auto tranny failed. My Milano was
pushing 200K on a high-performance rebuild at 140K and needed nothing in the
power department.
