[alfa] Re: cutting GTV-6 parcel shelf for speaker installation

The old saying goes "cut your car and you will live to regret it". Instead of
the two proposed full-range speakers in the rear deck, if cost and weight are
not an objective, you could remove the existing single speaker (but keep its
grille) and place a subwoofer in the trunk. The reason that one uses speakers
in the rear deck in the first place is to add bass to supplement the thin
sound from the front door-mounted speakers. Unfortunately, with the proposed
two full range speakers in the rear deck, all this sound coming from behind
gives a suboptimal stereo image as the rhythm section and male voices seem to
come from behind while higher pitched sounds are coming from the front. A
subwoofer, on the other hand, is crossed over at 90 Hz (very low), so it is
not possible for the human ear to locate that it is in the trunk. Its
frequency spectrum will supplement the front speakers (the brain will even
attribute its sound to the front speakers) while maintaining a good stereo
image. Of course, you could also experiment with a single full range speaker
in the existing opening. It may be fine for a non-critical application.
