RE: [alfa] Milano heater fan, etc

I just did this last week, not too hard really, although a bit of a PITA. Be
patient and take your time. It helps if you have an extra long Philips head
screwdriver (24" or so).

All work is performed within the footwell on the drivers' side ...

Remove the two screws that hold the outer cover on.

Remove the four (I think) screws that hold the inner cover to the housing.

Remove the wires (make a not of where they go) from the resistor (three
spade terminals up top), and remove the resistor carefully. If it only run
on high, the resistor is most likely the culprit, and there is no need to
remove the fan assembly.

Loosen the hose clamp that holds the motor to the cover, remove the hose
clamp.

You need to slide the cover off the motor, in order to remove the motor/fan
assembly, there is not enough room to remove them together.

Once the cover is off the fan, you can remove the motor/fan from the
housing. It's tight but it will come out.

While it is apart, remove any debris and dried leaves from within the
housing.

If it sounds like the cage is rubbing on the housing, it is likely that the
plastic flange that held the motor to the cover is broken. This is what I
found. I was able to repair it using three pieces of universal strapping
material bent at a 90 degree angle. I fastened one leg of each to the cover
with a pop rivet from the inside, and then put the clamp around the new
pieces to hold the motor in place. Once it was back together, I had to
loosen the clamp a little with the motor on to adjust the position just so
such that it was not rubbing or hitting anything.

How easy is it to remove the heater fan assembly from under the front of
the console of a Milano?  I have the cover removed from the motor side and
all bot one of the screws that hold the cover on in the passenger footwell.
Once I get that last hard to get to screw out, will I find there are still
6 or 7 impossible to remove, or if possible to remove, impossible to
replace fasteners I can't yet see?

Anybody out there have a spare fan assembly?  Mine runs only on high
(resistors burned out?) and has developed a wobble.  Until the assembly is
out I can't determine if the wobble and speed control are fixable or not.

I'm recently returned from Bombay (Mumbai).  Went there last year, didn't
like it.  Liked it less this time.  My thanksgiving meal was calamari,
tiger prawns and crabs in butter and garlic with a Kingfisher.  Very little
Alfa or even Italian content over there.  Lots of Fiat look-alikes, as the
tooling for the early 60's 1100 Berlinas and the 124 sedans was obviously
sold to Premier. Fiat does sell the Palio.  Best looking car I saw was a
Skoda, believe it or not.  Can't remember the model.  Obviously Alfa is
still popular in Europe, as about 6 of the car mags on the stand in
Schipohl had Alfas on the cover. All in all, it is good to be back in the
land of beef and safe water.
