anybody tried silicon aquarium sealer before?
Yeah, I split the back window on my spider a few years ago by putting it up when it was cold. My repair was to use heavy clear plastic tape on both sides of the window. Works well, and lasts for a years. Silicon sealer will not work as well as the tape for the back window. For small rub spots and holes I use "Goop" which is a flexible plastic glue, and is similar to silicon.

The spider is used in the warm months and I only use the top if it is raining heavily, but do put it up in the fall so that if I have to use the car during the winter, I won't break the window by raising the top up. As recently noted, it is easy to crack them in cold temperatures.

While we are on the topic of tops, I believe my '73 spider still has its original top. It is in pretty good shape, and generally watertight. It is black and appears to be made of vinyl covered fabric. Can anyone suggest how to identify an original top of that vintage?
