It also seems to be a function of the age/UV exposure of the window..  
they get more and more brittle
as they get older.  Eventually it won't even matter that it's a nice, 
warm day.

Of course, by then,  you can't see out of the thing,  and probably 
should have changed the top.

(caveat being:  this info is from my living in So CA where it hardly 
gets to 40 that often,  and back when
I didn't have a garage to keep the sun off the poor things)
