[alfa] Re: Clutch Master Cylinder Rebuild Questions- 69 Spider

Hi Peter:

Silicone fluid is completely non-hygroscopic, i.e. it absorbs no water. Problem is it's about 15% dissolved air, and I've never been able to get a firm enough pedal for my tastes. I used to drive British cars and tried it on a few XKE's with no success. Also tried it in my M3, and still had the soft pedal. DOT 3/4 fluids can also have very high boiling points, but as soon as any water is absorbed, it lowers dramatically, while DOT 5's stays the same. So, it's a lesser of two evils kind of choice. I'd rather have the firm pedal, and change DOT3/4 fluid quite often.

From all I've read, silicone DOT5 fluid is more hydroscopic than DOT4
mineral and DOT5.1 synthetic. Do you get less moisture absorption from the
silicone? I always understood it was for higher temperatures.
