If you buy new enough, some cars have free maintenance for a certain
period. And warrantees (up to 10yrs, 100k miles from some cars) take
care of what otherwise would be considered "maintenance" on an older car.
And some come with free roadside assistance for added peace of mind.
Depending on how you cook your books, you could amortize the depreciation
as the cost of these features :-)
Combine this with numerous engine advancements (240hp out of a naturally
aspirated factory street 2.0l was unheard of not long ago), safety
advancements (side curtain airbags anyone?), emissions advancements
(does your conscience say anything about pollution? Does your area
do smog checks?), etc. and the used vs. new debate isn't as simple
as it used to be.
